The department studies the co-evolutionary dynamics of the Anthropocene - the age when humans have become a dominant force on all parts of the Earth system. Understanding the evolution of the Anthropocene in the past and identifying possible future pathways requires a novel class of co-evolutionary models that can only be developed by incorporating rich data and approaches from Earth system modeling, conceptual modeling of processes in both social natural sciences, Earth system observation, field research, and network theory.
